Hydroponic Growing Systems

Hydroponic growing systems are a method of cultivating plants without soil, using a nutrient-rich water solution to deliver everything the plant needs directly to its roots.

Instead of soil, plants are usually supported by inert growing media like coconut coir, clay pellets, or rockwool.

Hydroponics is based on the idea that plants don’t actually need soil—they just need water, nutrients, oxygen, and support.

How hydroponic systems work

Plants are placed in a controlled environment where:

  • Roots are exposed to a balanced nutrient solution

  • Water is recirculated or delivered in a controlled way

  • Oxygen is supplied to roots (critical for healthy growth)

  • Light (natural or artificial) drives photosynthesis

There are several common system types:

  • Deep Water Culture (DWC): roots sit in oxygenated water

  • Nutrient Film Technique (NFT): a thin stream of nutrients flows over roots

  • Ebb and Flow (Flood & Drain): roots are periodically flooded and drained

  • Drip systems: nutrients are dripped onto the base of each plant

  • Aeroponics: roots are misted with nutrients

Key benefits of hydroponics

  • Faster growth
  • Higher yields
  • Water efficiency
  • Space-saving
  • Fewer pests and diseases
  • Precise control
  • Year-round growing

Indoor hydroponic systems allow you to grow crops regardless of season or weather.
